Wearing a spine brace may be a new experience for you and your family. You may wear it after surgery or after an injury. It will help protect your back and prevent movements such as bending and twisting to let you heal properly. This information and guidance from your care providers will help you know what to expect.
General Guidelines for Your Post-Op Spine Brace
- The length of time you will need to wear your brace depends on your condition and your physicians’ instructions.
- To protect your skin, you must wear a close-fitting shirt or body sock under the brace. Pull it tight so there are minimal wrinkles under the brace. Change your shirt daily or more often if excessive sweating occurs. Moisture can cause skin breakdown, infections, and body odor.
- You must check your skin frequently for red or pink marks. A red or pink mark on your skin lasting longer than 30 minutes could indicate too much pressure, and you should contact your orthotist.
- Avoid using lotions, creams, and oils on your skin under your brace. These products soften your skin and may lead to blisters or other skin irritations. If bruising or blisters develop, contact your orthotist immediately.
- Remove your brace for bathing. Your spine provider will give you specific instructions on bathing while you’re not wearing the brace.
- If you have an incision, continue to care for it as directed by your spine provider.
Cleaning Your Spine Brace
It is important to keep your spine brace clean. Wipe down the brace with rubbing alcohol at least once a day and let it dry for at least 10 minutes before putting it back on. You can also wipe down any pads that may be glued to the brace.
Follow-Up Care
You will likely see your spine provider for a follow-up appointment after you get your brace. You should see your orthotist on that day as well. When scheduling appointments, make sure you request an appointment with Orthotics, Prosthetics, and Seating (OPS) to have your brace checked. If at any time you have questions or concerns with your brace, you should contact OPS to talk to a spine orthotist.
