Help us learn about how orthopedic surgery affects how children with disabilities move and coordinate their muscles! The information gathered from this study will help establish the scientific basis to understanding motor adaptation and improve function and care for people with cerebral palsy and other neurologic injuries.

8-17 year-olds who:

  • Have a cerebral palsy diagnosis.
  • Are scheduled for an orthopedic surgery.
  • Have a parent or guardian who is able to speak and read in English.

The study will take place over the course of 18 months, spanning your scheduled surgery date.

The study will involve two visits.

Visit 1: 3-6 months prior to your scheduled surgery you will come in for a research gait lab visit, where you will:

  • Wear EMG markers and a robotic ankle brace.
  • Complete up to 4 activities aimed at assessing your ability to alter your walking pattern on a treadmill.

Visit 2: 9-18 months after your scheduled surgery, you will return for a research gait lab to:

  • Wear EMG markers and a robotic ankle brace.
  • Complete 1 activity aimed at assessing your ability to alter your walking pattern on a treadmill.

Yes - participants will be compensated $200 for completing the study, distributed in portions of $100 per visit. Reimbursement for travel expenses is available as well, up to $20 for mileage per visit.
