What is non surgical orthopedics?

Not all orthopedic diagnoses and/or injuries require surgery. Depending on the diagnosis or injury, there may be an opportunity to treat and heal without surgery. With some conditions, you may require surgical and nonsurgical options. With extensive knowledge of the musculoskeletal system, our providers will work with you to determine the best treatment plan. At Gillette Children's, we focus on healing brain, bone and movement conditions in a way that makes the most sense.

What orthopedic conditions can be treated without surgery?

Your child will work with a team of nationally recognized specialists who understand the challenges of kids who have complex brain, bone and movement conditions. The correct treatment plan is crucial.

As one of the nation’s top providers of pediatric inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation therapies, Gillette teaches kids to navigate their everyday world with confidence.

The conditions that can often be treated without without surgery are the following:

What are some non surgical orthopedic treatment options?

At Gillette, non surgical orthopedic care is often used as a first option for treatment. Physical therapy, medication, casting, or bracing can be great options depending on your child’s needs. Our medical experts will be able to perform an examination, diagnose what is happening, and determine what treatment option will work best based on the specifics of your child's condition.

Aquatic therapy is done in a swimming pool. A therapy pool can help kids improve their abilities and practice skills. The buoyancy of water reduces stress on the joints and helps to support body weight, making movement easier.

Water also offers resistance, enabling children to strengthen their muscles without using weights. In addition, water can help muscles relax and improve blood flow.

Castingcan be used for treating fractures, clubfoot casting and casting for other foot anomalies.

The rehab therapy team is comprised of occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech and language pathologists and nutrition and feeding therapists. They work together to help children recover.

Physical therapy, for example, can help improve a child’s gross motor skills, strength and balance, especially in children who are working through a sports-related injury. Our team of physical therapists use various technologies, tests and techniques to help kids reach new levels of independence and mobility. A physical therapist might also recommend adaptive and mobility equipment, including walkers, standers and wheelchairs.
