What is Infectious Disease Care?
Infectious disease care helps children affected by diseases caused by microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites. Depending on the specific infectious disease, symptoms can cause discomfort, headaches, itchy rashes and/or fevers. Some infectious diseases can result in serious complications, particularly when a child’s immune system is affected by certain medications, a recent surgery, an illness or a chronic medical condition.
When a child develops symptoms that may be caused by an infectious disease, our infectious disease experts work with families to find answers and determine an effective course of treatment.

An infectious disease care consultation can be useful for children or teens who have:
- Post-surgical infections (catheter-associated infections, central line-associated infections)
- Bone and joint infections, including infections around hardware (rods, plates)
- Fever of unknown cause
Tests and Treatments
When you work with the infectious disease specialists at Gillette Children’s, your child or family member will have access to many types of diagnostic testing, including blood tests and state-of-the-art medical imaging. We provide evaluation and treatment on an inpatient and an outpatient basis. Treatments may include intravenous (IV) medication management and/or oral medications.
