Job Shadowing Program at Gillette
The job shadowing program at Gillette Children’s allows people who are interested in health care careers to observe Gillette staff on the job.
Participation Criteria
To participate in the job shadowing program, you must:
- Be 16 years of age or older.
- Provide up-to-date immunization records.
- Be a current student enrolled in high school, a current student enrolled in a certificate or degree program, a current medical student enrolled in medical school, a recent graduate (within 1 years' time), or a visiting healthcare provider.

Please take note: Your application will not be considered unless all required documents are attached at the time of submitting your application. Also, due to high demand, observers may not observe the same discipline more than once or observe more than once per semester.

- Gait & Motion Analysis Center - Observe the physical therapist and engineer collect 3D motion capture of patient's gait and physical exam measures. Discuss how data is used to assist treatment planning. Applicant will be paired with either physical therapist or engineer based on educational interest.
- Imaging - Observe workflow and advanced imaging procedures in CT, MRI, Ultrasound and Fluoro. Observe workflow and xray exams in the Outpatient imaging department.
- Inpatient Nursing Support
- Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit - The Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit provides care to children and adolescents who are physically and/or cognitively impaired as a result of developmental problems, trauma, or neuromuscular disease and can benefit from an interdisciplinary team approach. Applicants will be paired with a Registered Nurse.

- Neurology
- Neurodiagnostics - Working as a Neurodiagnostic Technologist is engaging and you’ll stay mentally active as you analyze test results and discuss cases with doctors. You’ll also spend one-on-one time with patients preparing them for procedures. Neurodiagnostic tests are used to diagnose neurological disorders and diseases.
- Neurosciences Inpatient Nursing Unit - The Neurosciences Unit in a specialized inpatient hospital unit for pediatric (0-17 years of age) patients receiving medical and post-surgical care related to the brain and spine. Common patient conditions include patients recovering from neurosurgery, epilepsy/seizure management, and trauma affecting the brain, bones, and/or organs. We also treat complex children and adolescents experiencing a variety of medical conditions including respiratory illness, feeding intolerance, and infections. Applicants would be paired with a Registered Nurse for this experience (St. Paul location ONLY).

- Occupational Therapy - Observe therapists during inpatient/ outpatient therapy treatment sessions. Applicants will be paired with a therapist to observe activites and equipment used in therapy at either our pediatric or adult care locations (site dependent).
- Orthopedic and Surgical Inpatient Nursing Unit - Inpatient Nursing Unit caring for patients (less than 18 years of age) who are recovering from surgery requiring a stay for one or more nights. Also provides care for non-surgical patients in need of medical care or treatment requiring a short stay in a hospital. Applicants selecting this department will be paried with a Nurse.

- Pediatric Intensive Care Inpatient Nursing Unit - Intensive care unit managing patients from 0-25 years of age. Patients are admitted to this unit after surgery, due to acute medical diagnoses, or after experiencing a traumatic event. Applicants selecting this department will be paired with a Registered Nurse.
- Perianesthesia - PeriAnesthesia provides care to patients ages birth to 41 years of age prior to and after surgery and sedated imaging procedures. Applicants will be paired with a nurse or nursing assistant (when appropriate) when selecting this department.
- Phalen Outpatient Clinic Nursing (Peds & Adults)
- Pharmacy - Applicants will be paired with a pharmacist in a variety of work settings to get a good idea of the type of work hospital-based pharmacists do on a daily basis.
- Physical Therapy - Observe therapists during inpatient/ outpatient therapy treatment sessions. Applicants will be paired with a therapist to observe activites and equipment used in therapy at either our pediatric or adult care locations (site dependent).

- Speech Language Pathology - Observe therapists during inpatient/ outpatient therapy treatment sessions. Applicants will be paired with a therapist to observe activites and equipment used in therapy at either our pediatric or adult care locations (site dependent).
- St. Paul Outpatient Clinic Nursing - Outpatient clinic nurses work alongside providers in clinic to provide direct patient care. They also coordinate care for patients and provide the "care between the visits" by performing chart prep and addressing questions and concerns over the phone and portal. Applicants will be paired with an RN when shadowing this department.
- Supply Chain - Applicants job shadowing in Supply Chain will have the opportunity to participate in all functions of a hospital's Supply Chain, ensuring the right product is available at the right place at the right time. Tour a variety of supply areas within the hospital and clinics. Order and put away supplies for departments. Pick and process orders from one of our warehouse locations Pick and process orders from one of our warehouse locations. Help field phone call requests and deliver STAT items. Witness supply chain operations in a surgery setting. Receive and process inbound freight and other deliveries. Process shipping and returns. Participate in cycle counting and other miscellaneous activities.
- Surgical Services - Observing from our observation deck an acutal surgery in progress. Applicants will be paried with a Gillette OR team member to explain observations.
